The art of violin making is an age old tradition based on tacit empirical knowledge passed on through the generations.
Although the achievements of the greatest violin makers are extraordinary, there is a growing body of knowledge being gathered in the past few decades that allows makers to understand the physical workings of the instruments that only a few years ago would have been impossible.
Among the techniques being studied by some violin makers today are experimental modal analysis and computer aided tomography.
